Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course: Site Safety Plus

Funding: CITB grant payable of £240 per person to eligible companies
Duration: 5 day block or 5 days over 5 weeks

This five-day SMSTS course is for project managers, site managers and supervisors, business owners and clients.
It explains how to manage risks on-site, as per the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations.
Students will receive a CITB Site Safety Plus Certificate, which is valid for five years. This certificate must be renewed with a SMSTS Refresher course before this time is up.
Course Content
The course includes:
- The Health and Safety at Work Act
- Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations
- Risk assessments and method statements
- Managing hazards e.g. electricity, excavations, working at height, scaffolding, demolition, confined spaces
- Behavioural safety
- Occupational health
- Latest updates to acceptable working practices.
Teaching and assessment
Teaching involves classroom-based discussion, case studies, group work, presentations and homework.
Students must attend all 37.5 hours as per the Site Safety Plus attendance requirements.
They must also pass a multiple-choice test.

*This certificate must be renewed every five years before it expires by attending the SMSTS Refresher course. Otherwise, you will need to take the full SMSTS course again.
Entry requirements
- Good spoken and written English.
- Valid form of ID. See accepted forms of ID.
- Test re-sits must take place within 90 days of the original course date (at an additional charge).
