This five-day course is for supervisors and managers with responsibility for lifting operations. It aims to improve understanding of cranes and safety regulations.

You will receive a CPCS Trained Operator Card (red card) after passing the final assessment.

Those with CPCS Code A40 Slinger/Signaller will also gain the CPCS Code A62 Crane Supervisor qualification.

Course content

The course includes:

• Different types of cranes and associated documentation and terminology
• Crane regulations and Codes of Practice
• Safe systems of work including method statements
• British Standard 7121 Safe Use of Cranes Guidelines sections 1, 2, 3 and 4
• Recognising different work roles and taking personal responsibility
• Planning a lift.

Teaching and assessment 

Four days of classroom-based teaching and practical exercises

One day of CPCS technical tests

CITB National Construction College E-Certificate (available on request)

Those who already hold CPCS Code A40 Slinger/Signaller will also receive the CPCS Code A62 Crane Supervisor qualification.

Entry requirements

1. CITB Health, Safety and Environment test (Managers and Professionals) completed and passed within the past two years.
2. Sufficient experience with cranes to meet those specified in the British standard 7121 Safe Use of Cranes.
3. Good spoken and written English.
4. Valid form of ID. See accepted forms of ID.

Further training

You'll need to complete the Appointed Persons NVQ/SVQ level 5 within two years to get the CPCS Competent Operator Card (blue card). Register your interest for this NVQ here
