This five-day course is for supervisors and managers with responsibility for lifting operations. It aims to improve understanding of cranes and safety regulations.
You will receive a CPCS Trained Operator Card (red card) after passing the final assessment.
Those with CPCS Code A40 Slinger/Signaller will also gain the CPCS Code A62 Crane Supervisor qualification.
Course content
The course includes:
- Legislation, regulations and approved codes of practice (e.g. LOLER, PUWER, BS 7121)
- Roles and responsibilities in lifting operations: Appointed Person, Crane Supervisor, Crane Operator, Slinger/Signaller
- Types of cranes and lifting equipment: capabilities, limitations, terminology, duty charts, stability, ground conditions
- Documentation and certification: equipment and accessories, documentation required for safe use of cranes
- Safe systems of work: risk assessments, method statements, planning lifting operations from start to finish
- Selection and use of lifting accessories: slings, chains, shackles, mode factors, de‑rating, sling angles
- Communication, site access, egress, exclusion zones, wind effects, and other external factors that influence lifting operations
- Practical planning scenario: applying the theory to plan a lift, including drawing scale diagrams.

Four days of classroom-based teaching and practical exercises
One day of CPCS technical tests

Entry requirements
1. CITB Health, Safety and Environment test (Managers and Professionals) completed and passed within the past two years.
2. Sufficient experience with cranes to meet those specified in the British standard 7121 Safe Use of Cranes.
3. Good spoken and written English.
4. Valid form of ID. See accepted forms of ID.
