SkillBuild comes to Coleg Cambria on May 8 2019

In each heat trainees and apprentices compete in their chosen trades. The highest scoring competitors in the advanced competitions will be invited to take part in the UK national final at NEC Birmingham (November 15 – 17). UK winners will then have the opportunity to progress to the World Skills final in Shanghai in 2021.

Categories in the Coleg Cambria SkillBuild heat include:  bricklaying; carpentry; joinery; painting and decorating; plastering and drywall systems; and wall and floor tiling.

Commenting on SkillBuild, Mark Bodger, Strategic Partnership Director for CITB Wales, said: “The competition offers an opportunity for young people to showcase their skills and gain recognition for their ability.

“There’s a huge amount of construction talent and potential in Wales. I’m sure competitors will excel at the Coleg Cambria heat, go on to enjoy rewarding construction careers and do Wales proud at the UK final in November.”

As each level of competition progresses, competitors are tested not only on their technical abilities, but on their time-management, character and commitment. The competition helps learners build their confidence, self-esteem and life skills.

SkillBuild also encourages people to pursue fulfilling construction careers. CITB statistics estimate that 168,500 construction jobs will be created from 2019 – 23.
