The rail network is undergoing a significant upgrade investment in rail way lines which has increased the demands for skilled workers across the sector. The project will provide additional training for the existing workforce .

The purpose is to renew and / or gain a Sentinel proof of competency card to develop competent rail technical engineers. The project will deliver a blend of training initiatives, upskilling and enabling employees to undertake complex Engineering and Technical roles.

The aim is to improve employee retention and increase the pool of talent within the sector, along with enhancing employee skills and providing them with transferable qualifications.

  • 75 competent rail engineers
  • 13 HSQE briefings (every 4 weeks) approximately 75 Sentinel sponsored BCM staff and approximately 100 other employees.

Project summary

Across the rail sector there is a serious skills shortage and it is predicted that this will get worse. BCM Construction used CITB funding to enhance the skills of 70 existing workers, making them Network Rail competent to deliver key infrastructure work. 377 days of training and assessment were delivered over 12 months.

During the project the number of incidents being reported increased with the impact being fewer realised accidents actually occurring and lost time due to injuries decreasing.
