The apprenticeship typically takes 24 months to complete a level 5 SVQ qualification, working towards the apprenticeship standard. College attendance is structured in blocks of 1 to 4 weeks, which contribute towards this requirement.
An additional 12 months is required to achieve the Level 6 SVQ qualification.

Course content
The course will give the delegate the Knowledge, Skills, and Occupational Behaviours to become a Professional and Successful Plant Mechanic in the challenging and fast paced industry of Construction Plant Repairs and Maintenance.
The College based training and assessment part of the apprenticeship includes the skills and underpinning knowledge of the Health and Safety Legislations and behaviours in the Construction industry.
Underpinning knowledge, maintenance and basic repairs of the operating systems associated with the various types of machinery and equipment used within the construction industry, this will include:
Level 5 SVQ (2 years)
- Servicing and basic maintenance requirements and repairs
- Hydraulic systems
- Electrical systems
- Pneumatic systems
- Power units and fuel systems
- Tyres and brake systems
- Transmission systems
- Undercarriage, steering and suspension
- Small Plant
- Bench fitting
- Welding and cutting
- Track servicing and repairs.
The course will also expand the delegates communication, planning skills, awareness of safe working practices and the need to be a team player within the work environment.
Level 6 SVQ (1 year)
- Diagnose faults using modern diagnostic equipment on the technologically advanced systems found on modern construction equipment and machinery
- Advanced and modern Power units and associated fuels and components
- Advanced Transmission fault diagnostics and repairs
- Advanced complex Hydraulic systems, diagnostics, and repairs
- Advanced Pneumatic systems, diagnostics, and repairs.
Teaching and assessment
A mixture of on-the-job training and supervision. College based training, split between classroom theory and workshop practical sessions. Maths, English and ICT mandatory requirements met.
Methods of Assessments
The apprentice will be regularly assessed during college-based training through practical tasks and written assignments, with constructive feedback provided by instructors.
The apprentice will be expected to complete a Log of Progression, documenting their development of knowledge, skills, and behaviours. Additionally, there will be a series of individual knowledge assessments, practical assessments, and a professional portfolio aligned with the SVQ qualification.
Apprentices with additional learning requirements will receive tailored support throughout the course to ensure their success in achieving the qualification.
Qualifications you gain
- Level 5 SVQ in Construction Plant or Machinery Maintenance
- SQA qualification in Maths, English and ICT
- Level 6 SVQ in Construction Plant or Machinery Maintenance.
Mandatory entry requirements
Academic
The employer will establish the selection criteria; however, this will typically include an understanding of Maths and English, along with a basic knowledge of information and communication technology.
Apprentices who successfully complete the Level 5 SVQ qualification will automatically progress to the Level 6 SVQ qualification.
Additionally, apprentices must demonstrate a clear commitment to the Plant Mechanics industry and complete a work-based portfolio to achieve their SVQ qualifications.
