Lean construction module 8: value stream mapping

Purpose/scope

On completion of this training participants will be able to:

• Develop a current state value stream map of a simple process
• Undertake a mapping exercise to identify areas of waste and a state value stream map
• Develop an action plan on how to enhance value-adding steps and reduce essential non-value adding as well as non-value adding steps (waste).

CITB will gain assurance through the Recognised Organisation’s quality arrangements.

Approved Training Organisation’s will be required to supply confirmation of approval (centre approval and scheme approval) with the related Recognised Organisation’s awarding organisation or body. In most cases this will be an approval certificate provided by the Recognised Organisation’s awarding organisation or body, listing the routes, qualifications, and categories they are approved to deliver. In addition, a copy of the most recent external quality assurance monitoring report will be required, relating to the standard that you wish to be approved for.

This information will be reviewed by CITB’s quality assurance team. Approval will be subject to the required Recognised Organisation’s documentation being supplied by you. As part of the quality assurance checks, CITB may confirm the accuracy of documentation with the issuing organisation.

Value Stream Mapping Workshop Summary

This practical workshop teaches participants how to identify and reduce waste through Value Stream Mapping (VSM). It is designed for on-site delivery, with site access required before, during, and after the first session.

Workshop Objectives

• Understand and apply VSM to identify improvement opportunities.
• Create and implement an action plan for a more efficient future state.

Workshop Structure

1. Workshop 1 – Initiate
   
   • Introduce VSM.
   • Create a current state map and explore future state improvements.
   • Develop an action plan.
   • Obtain senior management sign-off.
     
     
2. Workshop 2 – Check and Continue
3. • • Assess progress vs. baseline.
     • Evaluate improvements and address challenges.
     • Discuss sustaining and expanding Lean techniques.

Off-site Alternative

• Use photos and data collected in advance from a chosen process or focus on a familiar off-site process.
• Workshops can be split into smaller sessions based on participant availability.

This module is useful for planners, managers, team members and leaders that are supporting or involved in Lean/improvement activities in the construction industry.

This standard is both practical and theoretical training, the practical element is 67% practical applied learning in the workplace.
