Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Awareness - GET3565
Overview
Duration
6 hours
Purpose/scope
The purpose of this standard is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to support the following:
Scope:
- theory and fundamental principals of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) to create a local coordinate system
- list potential sources of error
- accuracies involved with GNSS technology
- connecting a GNSS rover
- topographical survey
- setting out model data
- data management
- on-board functionality
- uploading and downloading
- importing and exporting files from field controllers
- measuring irregular areas and volumes
Learner pre-requisites
Learners must have a working knowledge of 3D coordinate geometry and have an understanding of setting out a network of primary control points using a total station (via traverse).
Instruction/ supervision
As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:
- an award in education and training (or equivalent, as per requirements for approved training organisations)
- an HNC or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering or Engineering Surveying or similar and have successfully completed training to this standard
- at least 2 years industrial experience relevant to the scope of the standard
- a verifiable CV demonstrating extensive experience as a site engineer across a broad range of construction projects (civils, building etc.) and current experience/CPD in the use of modern topographical equipment
Delivery
All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for learners to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation
The learning environment, class size and learner/trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable learners to achieve the learning outcomes
The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:
- face to face learning environment only (such as classroom/workshop etc.)
This standard is predominantly practical training
This standard is considered to be set at an entry level
Assessment
Informally Assessed
For the successful completion of training, the trainer must be satisfied that the learner has achieved all learning outcomes.
Quality assurance
Assured
Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.
CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.
Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.
Classification
Lifetime (Please note standards using this classification will only be grant aided once per learner)
Learning outcomes
The learner will be able to:
- use GNSS terminology
- explain basic principles of GNSS technology
- list situations where GNSS is appropriate and where it is not
- carry out site calibration to create a local coordinate system
- list potential sources of error in GNSS
- list factors affecting accuracy
- check and monitor levels of accuracy achieved
- select correct coordinate system for the project
- enter data into controller manually
- connect controller with GNSS rover
- navigate around menus and programs
- navigate stored information
- view, edit, add and delete data
- enter correct settings
- take a topographical survey and record results systematically
- set out points of known co-ordinates using the on-board functionality
- set out points at given chainages and offsets along a radius
- Import and export data to and from field controllers and computers
- extract line data reports
- measure irregular areas and volumes
Additional information about this standard
